Three districts complete buckwheat sowing in Gomel Oblast

Three districts of Gomel Oblast have completed sowing buckwheat, Chairman of the Agriculture and Food Committee of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee Anatoly Gaponik said during a staff meeting of the oblast executive committee, BelTA has learned.

“As of 18 May, buckwheat has been sown on 1,500 hectares, or 51% of the plan. Three out of 13 districts [that grow this crop] have finished sowing buckwheat. We will complete sowing buckwheat by 25 May. The same goes for millet and soybeans,” he said. “Farmers have already fulfilled the potato plan, and sunflower sowing is in its final stage,” he added.

As for vegetables, they have been sown on 1,060 hectares, or 76% of the plan, Anatoly Gaponik said. He noted that the main vegetables: beet, onion, carrot and cabbage – have been sown on 96% of the designated area. “Onions have been planted on 347 hectares, or 108% of the plan; carrots on 161 hectares, or 103%. Beet sowing is in its final stage,” he said.

Anatoly Gaponik added that the remaining 326 hectares are designated for sweet corn, green peas, asparagus and beans, planted according to a plan for later processing.

He also drew attention to the need for protective measures to preserve the future harvest. “Protecting spring grain crops from weeds must be given higher priority,” he concluded.
