TheatresThe first theatrical performances in Gomel are dated back to the late 18th — early 19th centuries and are connected with the theatre of Duke Rumiantsev. In the second half of the 19th century a proper theatre building (1852) and a winter theatre for 400 seats (1887 — 1900) appeared in Gomel.
Amateur theatres created by the local intelligentsia played a special role in the cultural life of Gomel. A musical drama association which was created in 1908 organized musical and literary-drama parties and published the "Gomel Musical-Theatrical Bulletin".
In 1919-1920 several theatrical groups were set up in clubs and other organizations, and the Gomel gubernian department opened training courses for folk theatres’ instructors. The Russian drama theatre was opened in the oblast in 1939 and the Gomel puppet-show in 1963. The experimental theatre "Verasen" was inaugurated in Mozyr in 1990 and was turned into the Mozyr drama theatre n. a. Ivan Melezh in 1995. In 1992 the first private professional independent theatre "NT SF Records" was opened in Gomel.
