Mineral deposits in Gomel oblast are plenty. The most important fuel and energy resources are peat, oil, assist gas, bituminous and brown coal and shale oil.
The country started to extract oil in 1964 near the settlement of Rechitsa. But the deposits of oil are scanty in Belarus satisfying only up to 4 per cent of the country’s fuel needs.
The per-annum peat extraction is 1 million tons (17 per cent of the total amount of peat extracted in Belarus). There are about 1,500 peatbogs under development the biggest being in the Zhlobin, Rechitsa, Bragin and Svetlogorsk regions.
Two shale oil deposits have been explored. The brown coal deposits in near the settlements of Zhitkovichi and Brinev are estimated at 99,3 million tons.
Almost all regions of the oblast boast an extensive supply of raw materials for construction purposes. Some 17 regions of the oblast extract clay to manufacture bricks and tiling. There are 11 brick factories.
Specialists are busy developing the Diabazovoye ore deposit which is crucial to produce beryllium and rare earth elements of the cerium group; there are non-stoping efforts to develop diamond deposits (the Zhlobin-Rogachev part of the Northern-Pripyat lowland).
A well-known type of white salt Extra is produced at the Mozyr salt processing factory using the potential of the Mozyr salt deposit.
Sanatoriums and spa centers have been opened at the sites of mineral waters. The production of bottled mineral water has been developed. |
